Gay filmmaker, artist, gardener, and writer known for his films about historical homosexual figures, like Sebastiane (1976), Caravaggio (1986), Edward II (1991), and Wittgenstein (1993). He is also known for his experimental film Blue (1993) about his experience with AIDS, and for his short films used as music videos, most famously for the Smiths song The Queen is Dead (1986).
