James Beard was an American gourmet chef famous for creating the first ever TV network cooking show “I love to Eat” which aired from 1946 to 1947 on NBC. During his career he penned over 20 cookbooks and fostered a lifelong friendship with fellow television personality Julia Child through their mutual book agency. Beard is known for championing the farm-to-table movement before the concept was popularized.
Beard was openly gay and lived with his partner, pastry chef Gino Cofacci, for over 30 years.
