Authorities in Greece are today up in arms after the release of an erotic film showing two young men having sex at the ancient Acropolis.
Gay sex at the Acropolis? I’m sure the ancient Greeks would be furious at the idea of such flagrant homosexuality – oh, no, wait, they were probably too busy fucking boys to really care.
The 36-minute film, Departhenon, was uploaded in full in December but has only now caught the eye of Greek authorities. Its creators call it a statement of LGBT political activism.
It tells the story of two young men remembering their past erotic adventures as an ex-couple. Midway through the film, the pair fuck in broad daylight at the ancient Acropolis in Athens – one of Greece’s most important and revered archaeological sites.
Their actions have got the Greek authorities baying for blood. The Acropolis is ‘not suitable for any kind of activism or other activity which would cause offense’, the country’s Ministry of Culture is reported saying. An investigation has been launched.
You’d think the nation’s government would remember the rampant homosexuality that ancient Greece is historically known for, with sexual relationships between adult men and young boys being a socially significant affair. Sex between adult men is similarly documented, albeit carrying a greater social stigma in many circles.
“It is about the desire and need to live in the way we want. We do not see anything strange or unnatural in what we do.”
And so the Acropolis, which overlooks the city of Athens, has most certainly witnessed gay sex before.
In a statement on their website, the film’s creators said: “Why make a film that involves erotic elements? Maybe the answer is obvious: eros and sexuality play an important role in our lives.

“Some of us face physical and verbal violence because of our choices and expressions on sexuality, while we know that other people are killed or imprisoned as well because they have what is called by some as abnormal sexuality.
“From children – usually boys – that cannot find a single safe space, when their classmates decide that they are faggots, to people being beaten, marginalized or even stabbed with knives, which are things that many suffer from, especially groups such as trans women.
“Let this small gesture be a voice saying that nobody is alone. We will be living eros and sexuality just as we wish and we will be defending the public existence and coexistence of all sexualities.”
The choice of the Acropolis as a filming location for their film’s sex scene was a deliberate one, according to the directors. They chose it because it represents Greece’s nationalism, the worship of antiquity, patriarchy, mass culture and commercialization.
The filmmakers added: “It is about the desire and need to live in the way we want. We do not see anything strange or unnatural in what we do.”
We applaud these filmmakers for showing sex between men – as natural now as it has been for centuries – as boldly as they have done. As we know only too well, illustrating the existence of men who have sex with men is often a battle, and we’re on their side.

It would really upset the Greek sex police if you watched the movie and showed your support to the filmmakers behind it…
